BACHELOR by dale is interviewed by Our Town NY

July 1st, 2011

This week BACHELOR by dale was interviewed by the Upper East Side local paper, Our Town NY, by their lead writer Megan Finnegan.  The interview appears in the paper’s 40th Anniversary issue.

“Designing the Perfect Bachelor Pad Digs”

Excerpts from the article …

“Dale Cohen knows what men want, and often the things they want are TVs. Most often, however, the single men who are her interior design clients want someone to do the worrying and planning for them, which is exactly what Cohen does so well.”

….

“When she envisioned her own firm, she thought about previous clients and remembered how fun it was working with bachelors.  “My last client in L.A. was a bachelor, and I had just a great time, because of the tempo of the work and how you talk and the meetings,” said Cohen. She decided to specialize in helping single men create the homes they wanted but couldn’t figure out—or be bothered—to put together themselves.”

….

“A lot of men are waiting for their [future] wife” to decorate, said Cohen. “It’s still a little college-slash-grad school, cavemen. I tell them, really successful men don’t wait for anything.” Many of her bachelor clients end up in serious relationships by the time she’s finished with their apartments.”

….

“Your space has the capacity to impact you, and a beautiful home really does create a sense of calm,” Cohen said. “It’s important for you to be able to succeed in the rest of your life.”

BACHELOR by d.a.l.e. on Men’s Top Five Fav’s at Home

5 April 2011

I recently worked with the passionate social media entrepreneur and bachelor Peter Shankman on the design of a rug showroom window on 59th Street here in New York City. In many ways Peter is similar to many of the men I have worked with: solely focused on work, sports, technology, and comfort. To that end I incorporated a few of what I have experienced to be Men’s Top Five Fav’s at Home, and you probably would have guessed that 4 of the 5 have to do with technology!

1.  A REALLY BIG TV. I know this is obvious, but that does not preclude its importance. Because men watch sports on TV, they like/need/require a really big screen. There are projects I have worked on that began simply because a client’s husband wanted a 50 or 60” TV and hundreds of thousands of dollars later we renovated their entire home. And that leads me to #2.

2.  TV’s EVERYWHERE! Many people, i.e. wives, think that installing that one really big TV is enough to satiate their husband. Here’s the news flash: it’s not! Men tend to travel from room to room watching the same game, often using the picture in picture feature to watch a few games simultaneously. This is a fact of life—no need to try to fight it, things will be easier if you simply accept it.

3.  AUDIO FOR THE VISUAL. So while I am happy to suffer with the speakers that come with my flat screen TV, men like to hear the thunder of applause, screaming, warfare … whatever they are watching. So a full surround-sound system will be required on at least one TV, if not all!

4.  ELECTRONIC SHADES /DRAPERY (anything else with a remote control!). Truth be told, I have yet to meet a man who doesn’t get excited, eyes all a twinkle, when they get a new electronic gadget, be it a TV, a Crestron remote control system, a new car or electronic shades – they all seem to possess a latent James Bond fantasy. For my money, electronic shades are cool, but pretty far down on the list – unless you live in a glass house with a million windows and a one-touch up or down will really make a difference.

5.  A COMFORTABLE SOFA/CLUB CHAIR. While I have listed this last, it is hardly the least important.  All the men I have worked with are creatures of both habit and comfort.  My firm provides full design, selection and installation services, therefore I rarely schlep my male clients shopping – since it seems to be akin to Chinese water torture for my Bachelor clients – and yet we have to shop for seating because if they buy it, regardless of what it looks like, it has to be comfortable!  This is the hardest item to select since I can never tell what will be comfortable for someone else … and I am always pleasantly surprised at how much the men I work with prize their comfort, there is something endearing to me in their attention to the fluffiness of the down and the soft texture of the fabric.

Peter Shankman Window at Rug+Kilim

Shankman Window at Rug + Kilim, 240 East 59th St, NYC

.

BACHELOR by d.a.l.e was recently chosen by the wonderful Rug + Kilim to design one of their windows on 59th street here in NYC.  With great excitement we began our task and first on the list was to choose a bachelor to be the subject of our window.  Immediately Peter Shankman‘s name came to mind, getting his emails from HARO, Help a Reporter Out, three times a day you can imagine he was an easy choice.  When I contacted Peter, whom I had never met, his response was pitch perfect and I think quintessentially Peter  ” This could be fun! “

.

Peter is a great subject, full of life and fun and driven to excel in all his adventures.  I walked into his apartment and was taken, as most would be, by the three 52″ flat screen tv’s on one living room wall.  This really is a bachelor pad.  Peter says that he uses the two flanking tv’s as screens for his apple laptop and the one in the center is an actual tv.  Listening to Peter is an adventure in itself, his mind works quickly and moves from topic to topic … and when we landed on his passion for skydiving he fired up his laptop and began showing me videos of several of his jumps, he has been on 250.  After watching the first one I understood immediately how addictive the rush would be and in much the same way my nephew will pop off a roller coaster a bit wobbly and say “let’s go again”, it is clear that the same feeling happens post-skydive.  With that I knew that we needed to have screens in the window showing Peter’s skydives.

.

When the idea of the screens came up we called Larry Bedrosian of Bedrosian Media Solutions.  He suggested and installed the sleek LED tv’s you see in the window with 2minute videos running continuously of Peter’s skydiving adventures.

Then the work of designing the window began.  We selected a very special chaise designed by Maarten van Severen in the 2006 that is exclusive to our friends at SUITE NEW YORK.

.

Rug + Kilim's Shaggy Rug

.

Having selected this chaise, which is slender and legs that are a bit spiky, the rug would need to be plush, super plush! in order to create the feeling of sexy, luxury and Susan Iszak of Rug + Kilim knew just the rug, their luxurious Shaggy rug.

.

Wanting a slight 1960′s bachelor vibe, but not over the top, we selected a vintage Reggiani cascading fixture from the 1960′s that we found at Las Venus.  The fixture creates a sense of verticality and whimsy, and adds a bit of sparkle to the window.

Deborah Goodman Davis Fine Art Consulting

.

When thinking about the art for window I enlisted the talents of the art consultant and my friend Debbie Davis.  She has an impeccable eye and she has the uncanny talent of knowing just what you are looking for even though you are not fully able to articulate it.

.

When I described Peter and his love of technology almost immediately she sent over photographs of the Hadron Collider by Simon Norfolk.  Instantly knowing this was perfect.  And Debbie worked with the Bonni Benrubi Gallery to secure the loan.

.

Lasso Sculpture by SkLO

.

Wandering around the first day of the New York Gift Fair, I was taken with the brilliant work of  SkLO Studio.  Karen Gilbert loved the idea of their work being in a window in New York, as they are based in Heraldsburg, California.

.

After having fallen in love with Simon Norfolk’s Hadron Collider photos, I began to look around for scientific photos of the collider and began to play with these images as pattern.  This is the product of playing around and around with some of these images creating wallpaper for the window.

.

Working with Rug + Kilim installing this window and working with their product was great.  They make everything easy and find a way to solve every problem.  And Peter Shankman was the perfect subject for our window installation and for launching the newly re-named www.BACHELORbydale.com.
